"Seventeen years later than expected, 1984 has arrived. In his address to Congress Thursday, George Bush effectively declared permanent war -- war without temporal or geographic limits; war without clear goals; war against a vaguely defined and constantly shifting enemy."

I don't believe 1984 will ever happen in any literal sense, because of the dynamic between politicians and consituents in American government. Not that I believe that politicians always act in the best interest of their constituents; but keep in mind before politicians enter politics, they're ordinary citizens. And after they leave politics, they become ordinary citizens again. Therefore, it's not in their own best interests to oppress ordinary citizens.

No successful politician ever becomes an "ordinary citizen" again. They either stay in politics until they're dead, or use their position to obtain benefits that last beyond their term.

thank you for that reassurance that i probably shouldn't need, but do...

i know that in the literal sense, it's practically impossible. but the parallels still can frighten me...
