that's a connection i'm sure many people have already made, myself included.

i'm kinda split down the middle. one half of me finds that connection to be nothing more than exagerated coincidence. that's either because i've fallen for that trust of my big brother bush, or because i'm capable of rationally understanding that something like 1984 is merely a story, and that our leaders would not allow something like that to take us over.

the other half of me, however, is absolutely petrified at the thought. that half of me is convinced that the road may be long, but that road is definately leading towards oceana. that part of me is either foolish and terrified for no other reason than paranoia, or is completely aware and unprepared to deal with the fact that we're all fucked-o-plenty.

I don't believe 1984 will ever happen in any literal sense, because of the dynamic between politicians and consituents in American government. Not that I believe that politicians always act in the best interest of their constituents; but keep in mind before politicians enter politics, they're ordinary citizens. And after they leave politics, they become ordinary citizens again. Therefore, it's not in their own best interests to oppress ordinary citizens.

No successful politician ever becomes an "ordinary citizen" again. They either stay in politics until they're dead, or use their position to obtain benefits that last beyond their term.

i know that in the literal sense, it's practically impossible. but the parallels still can frighten me...
