Driving in New Orleans earlier today, our route was interrupted by a street work crew. As we got closer we saw they were painting a giant "X" on one lane of the street. Since we're in the habit of watching old cartoons before going to bed (METV Toons over the air broadcast), our only question was who was about to drop a giant boulder there, the Coyote or Boris Badenov.

Do You Get It

Here's a little cartoon by Clifford Berryman from 90 years ago. You no doubt recognize the personifications of the USA's pair of ruling parties. "Borah" refers to William Borah of Idaho. It seems he was an intelligent fellow of honest principles who somehow wound up in the U.S. Senate -- sounds implausible, but statistical anomalies do happen once in a while. Well, Borah did a study of how elections were bought and sold and the attendant corruption. As the cartoon shows, those two animal headed deities that run this country weren't able to get their minds around the notion there was anything wrong in that.

We're winding down a 6 Billion Dollar political campaign here in the USA - I hope we all got our money's worth.

Why the White House won't release its Katrina papers

Mayor Nagin seeks foreign aid

Gov. Blanco threatens to with hold approval of new offshore petrolem leases I hate to think how badly Americans would fare if disaster hit some part of the country with even less clout/resources/etc than here.

And remember, in Greater New Orleans, the big disaster wasn't Katrina, it was the Levee failure.

Overtopping claim won't hold water, experts say "So, yeah, this was a human failure, not a natural disaster." More evidence giving additional confirmation to what's already known.

And in other news:
Much Muslim outrage not actually about the Danish cartoons, but rather over a different set of cartoons an extremist group forged to deliborately stir up trouble. and More commentary
