You know what I don't understand? I mean, as a human being who is seeing these images and hearing these stories, I truly and deeply don't understand?
How can these people not shed a tear. Every time I see Dubya or Chertoff or any one of these federal sociopaths, they have these steely looks and they talk about "cracking down" and how they could never have expected this disaster and there's NO emotion in their voices. They could just as well be talking about some obscure point of fiscal policy. There's no tone of empathy or understanding for what people are going through.
I don't understand it at all. I've been moved to tears over what I see. I can't fathom this sort of bottomless well of despair and desperation, but I'm overwhelmed by it every time I turn on the TV. How can ShrubCo be so unemotional, so cold and distant and aloof? Are they even human anymore?
They could have as flat an affect as a serial killer and I wouldn't mind if they actually did their jobs.
I think that even before Katrina hit, they were starting to fall apart. They simply couldn't fathom the Cindy Sheehan episode; the idea that the country could actually be turning against them emotionally doesn't register. It's not plausible in their universe. It's the kind of cognitive dissonance that makes them freeze or retreat to a scripted bubble world of rallies with screened audiences. And then to have a real disaster, a once-in-a-century catastrophe kind of like a city getting nuked only with no enemy to fight over it, hit while they're in this state... it's the kind of panic that turns you into a sort of robot. Deer in the headlights. They are simply constitutionally unable to do what we pay them for.

That's the thing... is someone who exhibits no emotional impact from this going to be motivated to go all out and do what needs to be done? Why did it take the President and Congress days to come back from their vacations after this happened? I think it's for the same reason that they just don't show any emotion. I thought Dubya's comments about Trent Lott's house were rather telling as to what their emotional stake and priorities are in all of this.
argentee made it, as she used to live in Morgan City and her baby sister was born in New Orleans. By all means, if you'd like, take it and share it. It's what she's hoping for. :)
Reading lots of stuff now saying it's unseemly to exploit the victims of the hurricane to further partisan political ends, etc., etc.
Where do you draw the line, though? Is there some magnitude of screw-up beyond which it's undignified to blame the people who screwed up? I refrained from knocking the administration for a while after Sept. 11, 2001; I gave them the benefit of the doubt and hoped for the best from them, really for about a year and a half. I've seen what those people do with that kind of slack and I don't intend to repeat the mistake.
