infrogmationOur second instalment has more local color.
The Krewe of OAK parades in my neighborhood of New Orleans(Carrollton) the Friday night before Mardi Gras. I love the small neighborhood celebrations with home-made floats and costumes. This is part of the Mardi Gras season celebrations that the tourists don't get to. OAK starts and ends on Oak Street, but the Krewe name stands for "Outrageous And Kinky". OAK parades around this mixed residential/commercial neighborhood for several hours with watering stops at various local bars.
Some medium-risque costumes; may not be suitible for viewing by John Ashcroft.
Golf cart floats with effigy heads of notable Carrollton neighborhood characters (music legend James Booker up front)
The Queen of OAK. (My shot of the King didn't turn out well, alas. This year's King is Frenchie, the artist with the studio across from the Maple Leaf.) All Hail!
I played with one of two bands in the parade; here's our ever stylish soprano sax player.
The gal on the left painted the one on the right. "Hey, take my picture, so I can send it to my Ma! Whoo!" Note that the dragonfly is holding a booze bottle and a bong.
Mardi Gras Indian
The famous "Bearded Oysters" dance troupe on a balcony before the start of the parade.
The Oysters on the street. They do a song & dance to the tune of the Hokey-Pokey. "You stick your finger in, you take your finger out..." "...you do the bearded oyster, and you shake it all about..." It's fun and funny the first several times they do it. After a couple of hours, however...
Hey Bearded Oysters! I love you! But! Work up at least one other routine to vary things a bit, eh?
