I stayed in my neighborhood (Carrollton, in Uptown New Orleans), as that sounded more appealing than party hopping around town this New Year.

Mr. F. not far from my place has folks over for New Year's eve. Some folks bring their instruments and jam.

I was pleasantly surprised to see some old familiar faces I hadn't seen in a while.

In above photo, left to right: Ms. J. back in town from Austin. Ms. V. visiting from California. Mustang Sally, who has been in town but busy finishing Nursing School; she now has graduated and started off the New Year socializing and will start playing her trombone again. On right is your narrator, in the first known photo of him with his new glasses.

Ms. J. brought some fireworks from Texas.

I stayed til about 3 or 3:30; I was told it continued at least til dawn.

The next day over to J.W. & A.W. 's place, who have a traditional New Years Day bonkay of black-eyed peas, rice, and cabbage in their elegant old Carrollton home. A friend who I expected to show up didn't, but I had good time socializing anyway. Talk about music, obsolete audio, lost snippets of balderized pre-Hayes code movies, and playing chess. A small music jam as well. Mr. Von Turk gave a demonstration of recorded music played on various period equipment ranging from a crude 1880s cylinder phonograph up through the modern high-technology of the 1926 Orthophonic Victrola. One of the traditions here is the serving of beer floats-- yes, a glass of beer with a scoop of icecream. I hadn't had one in since I first tried one at the party 10 years ago, but Mr. S. serving them talked me into taking a glass. I did not finish it; that was plenty to hold me for at least another decade.

As New Orleans can't abide the notion of a party-less stretch inbetween New Years Day and the start of Carnival on the night of the 6th, last night was the big to-do of P.J.'s big Silly Hat Party at Southland Hall, in old Jefferson one block outside of Carrollton. More food and music and such, here with a real stage for playing on and a dance floor for dancing upon. And many silly hats.

HAPPY FROG YEAR!
