In honor of the holiday season, let's look at some more delightful customs from our friends in Catalonia -- the folks who decided that the appropriate way to honor the Miracle of the Holy Eucharist is with wacky dancing giants (see my previous post).

The Tió de Nadal is the traditional Christmas log.

He's kept warm with a blanket and stocking cap.

Until the time arrives for the children to beat him with sticks. They beat him until he poos out the presents hidden inside.



Wrapped presents are a modern variation of the custom; the traditional treat inside the log was figs. Yum.

No, the "Christmas poo" tradition was hardly original to South Park.

And on that topic, no Catalan Nativity scene is complete without a Caganer figure.

I'm not sure what to think.

South Park did a parody of sappy Christmas specials with "A Woodland Critter Christmas".

It was the usual sickness for South Park.

The first time I read that Wikipedia article, I was convinced it was a highbrow South Park joke until about halfway down.
