We have a winner!

"Cubic Pastry" are...

Crackers

The circle at the lower right says "Inner Mongolia BaotouShi Chin Cui Foods Co., Ltd CUBIC PASTRY"

Below that the English text reads:
"Its most material is selected heatao wheat flour which is pure green and no pollution, and adopted elaborately especial natural plants of Neimeng as the supplement. It is fit for all the old and young,so it is the best selection to tour and leasure"

Made by Mongolian bachelor farmers, so you know it's pure, mostly.

As the fine folks in my journal didn't come up with the answer (but thanks for all the entertaining replies!), I extended the puzzler to [livejournal.com profile] kibology.

[livejournal.com profile] eventualdave came up with today's secret word, "cracker". My friend assures me that what was in the package were crackers. I also would have accepted the answer "cookies", as from a google search it seems that the phrase "Cubic Pastry" is also used for those, not just in mainland China, but also in Taiwan (the birthplace of the original Tongue of Frog).

Yes, yes, they are clearly rectangular, rather than actual cubes. No, I don't know where to write to complain.

Do check out the post in the Kibology community for links to more images of Cubic Pastry packages.

Two Froggy points and a hearty "Congratulations" to eventualdave for the right answer.

One Froggy point to [livejournal.com profile] pootrootbeer for the most logical wrong anwer, "petit fours". The next time I see petit fours, I will be tempted to say "Please pass me a cubic pastry".

One Froggy point to [livejournal.com profile] pentomino for the most amusing answer, "Rubic's Cake".

Thanks to everyone for playing!

It's showing up fine for me now. Maybe photobucket was temporarily down? Anyone else having a problem seeing it?

I'd like to assure everyone I'll be using these Froggy Points as encouragement to finally try Kasugai Peanut and You. Maybe even Calpis. I don't know. We'll see what kind of a weekend it is.

Someone should try to make an actual Rubic's Cake. That would be cool.
