I complained about Dick Cheney here often enough her back in the day that I suppose his death merits a post.

A friend comments "I’m not gonna lie. There was a time that when Dick Cheney died that I would’ve been dancing in the streets, but Trump messed that up for me."

Cheney lived long enough to see the tactics he mainstreamed used against his own daughter.

We already have extrajudicial government kidnappings and executions, and torture gulags. There are groups of armed government thugs patrolling beating up bystanders and being told they have supposed legal immunity. Big corporations coerced into paying bribes or giving shares of their business to the government leaders. Demands to silence non-compliant media and to muzzle, neuter, or destroy higher education. A "President" who not only openly commits crimes, but revels in how much he can get away with.

That thus far some of these efforts have had only mixed success is due to parts of judiciary still trying to adhere to written law and the Constitution, push back from some state and local governments, and importantly many common citizens. That the regime has not yet succeeded in implementing full fascism does NOT mean they don't want to. It DOES mean that we still have (dwindling) time to avoid that fate if we FIGHT BACK.

What term do you think would be more accurate to describe the Trump regime's smashing of of democratic & republican norms and laws? "Authoritarian"? "Totalitarian"?

Whatever you chose to call it, Ben Franklin's comment, when asked if the US Constitutional Convention created a monarchy or a republic, is called to mind: "A republic, if you can keep it."

We are in greater danger of losing it than any time since at least since the American Civil War.

My point is we're having oligarchy democracy which have nothing in common with a republic by Ben Franklin where two oligarchy competing for money and power and as result they try take full power and remove each other from competition.

Surprise for "Authoritarian" or "Totalitarian"? Not at all, because it is very logical to replace an oligarchy democracy to any kind of authoritarian or totalitarian regime.
