I've been enjoying participating in some of the many New Orleans events for July, notably the 4th of July and Bastille Day celebrations.

For the 4th of July, there was a new event, a "Boat Parade" hosted by the Krewe of Colossus. The "boat parade" consisted of decorated canoes and other small craft (including some improvised rafts) on Bayou St. John in Mid-City New Orleans.

I was part of a large brass band playing on the banks of the Bayou.

The band consisted of members and occasionals of the Goodchildren Brass Band and Pair-a-Dice Tumblers. One usually shouldn't expect much musical finesse from such oversized "herd of cats" bands, but this conglomeration for the most part worked out better than it had rights to, and we even dashed off credible performances of some tunes not in the repertory of either of the parent bands. The weather also turned out to be surprisingly nice (for July in New Orleans, either sweltering or raining would be more typical). Good times!
You Tube video of stills and vid clips of the event, including at the start a short clip of the band

Ten days later was 14 Julliet, offering a wealth of events I sampled.
The first was the Faubourg St. John Bastille Day block party on Ponce de Leon Street off Esplanade Avenue. Live music, food, crafts, and of course some in New Orleans need little excuse to dress for an occasion.

Then down the French Quarter, where I caught a bit of the celebrations on the grounds around the Old Mint.

Then it was time to meet over on Frenchmen Street for the Bastille Day Tumble - a sort of musical pub-crawl.

Warming up on Frenchmen Street before the start of the Tumble
At the Washington Artillery Cannon across from Jackson Square.
The music is of the "herd of cats" type, but happy cats. Some of the good time spirit of the event comes thru.
