Yesterday afternoon I was playing with a jazz band with a bunch of revelers, many in wacky costumes, out on a side street in Uptown New Orleans. A friend drove by and asked what the occasion was, and I said it was a pre-party for an upcomming party.

That got me to thinking... Where else but New Orleans do they throw parties to celebrate that they're going to have a party?

Of all the things that have been meta'd: business meetings, operating systems, cars... why have I reached the age of 32 before considering meta-parties?

because the parties themselves are stressful enough?

Actually, though, that's probably the reason for most pre-party parties I've been aware of. A small, tight-knit group gets together to socialize (and/or get drunk) before going to the big, overwhelming (and/or not open-bar enough) shebang, like a class prom or reunion.

And post-parties have always seemed common enough to me, again as small groups broken out from a large party--some with people leaving the big party early, some with the last stalwarts still up after everyone else has gone home.
