Froggy's Weekend
Aug. 19th, 2002 02:26 pmIn which Your Amphibious Cyber-Pal goes to a New Orleans Krewe party, plays horn for a chicken drop, attends an after-hours jam of which webpix may be viewed, and marks the passing of New Orleans Worst Film Festival
Saturday early evening I went to Tipitina's for the picture party of a Carnival Krewe. There was some good pot-luck food dishes, BBQ, and a kegs of Abita beer. After a band of guitars played on stage a while, the Tumblers Brass Band assembled on the Neutral Ground in front of Tips for the Chicken Drop to raise funds for the Krewe. For those who don't know, in a Chicken Drop people place bets on numbers corresponding to squares on the floor of an enclosure where a live chicken is placed after being fed a laxative. If the chicken dumps on your number, you win! I think this practice came to town from out in Cajun country.
We played for the start of the first drop, then paraded in to Tips and played for another 45 minutes.
Afterwards I found out that the police stopped the drops after the first round. The organizers were told that within the City limits, chicken drops had to be indoors, though cock-fights on city neutral grounds are legal. Learn something new daily...
Afterwards a few of us went over to Fred's house in the Carrolton neighborhood, where we jammed on into the early morning. One of the folks there had a digital camera and put the pix on the web, so you can see Froggy playing trombone (and some drums) with musical friends & acquaintances:

Sunday I went a New Orleans Worst Film Festival meeting. In short, it looks like after 12 fine years the New Orleans Worst Film Festival is over, or at least on indefinite hiatus. While this years festival was fairly well attended and a success in raising some food & money for our charity Second Harvesters Food Bank, rising expenses and declining sponsorship left the festival some $400 in the red (which our president had to pay out of his pocket). That, combined with various personal issues, lead Alfred to the decision. He had long said he'd keep doing it as long as it was fun-- and for now, the fun is over. We had a good run. It was a rather emotional meeting, and we reminisced about the good times over the years.
