Wondering simply

Is there really any significant number of people, with IQs of 100 or more and who don't go to churches where services feature snake handling, who really BELIEVE that Obama is a Sekrit Muslim Ter'rist? Or is it pretty much something that people like spreading because they're against Obama for some reason or another and think that other people will be dumb enough to fall for it?

really, rationally believe, or really, subconsciously believe? Because the latter is a lot harder to root out and just as powerful in swaying their votes.

I think there's a lot of thought along the lines of: "I heard he is one and it sounds unbelievable, but what if it's true? There's just something about him that bothers me and I'm scared."

In other words, gut mistrust of people unlike themselves, and fear of the unknown, given an only semi-rational outlet. I'd feel superior but the fact is, a lot of my own liking for Obama is probably just as tribal.

I don't know what you'd say about my mother's IQ, and to my knowledge her church doesn't handle snakes, but she has, on several occasions, insisted that Obama is a sleeper agent for Al Qaeda and that they are going to activate him as soon as he becomes president. (I guess maybe he's going to shove a suitcase nuke up his ass and detonate it during his first State of the Union address to take out the entire U.S. government?)

She has recently said that his real name is Barry and he changed it to Barack because muslims are required to have a muslim name.

The kernel of truth there is that he did go by Barry for a while. Of course his real name is Barack (which is a cognate of Baruch, a name familiar to a lot of American Barrys).

There are just some people who love to believe in conspiracy
theories, no matter how irrational they may sound.
Locally there is a guy who makes rounds to all local businesses once every three months and hands out booklets on the undercover, insidious, government contrail(chemtrail) experiments.
He firmly believes it because "it's a Doctor who is a friend of mine who uncovered this excessive rate of cancer was due to these contrails/chemtrails".
On everything else he talks about, he appears completely rational.
