Plorkwort mentions the film "In the Shadow of the Moon" about the Apollo moon missions.

In my teens I was surprised to find out that I was the only one of my high school class to have memories of watching the moon landing on tv. Little Froggy evidentally thought it more attention worthy than his peers.

I recall feeling some disappointment while watching the returned astronauts' ticker-tape parade through Manhattan on t.v.; Walter Cronkite mentioned that it was the second largest turnout for such a parade in history, after Lindbergh's. Up to that point, I'd been feeling pride in having lived through a moment of history equal to those experienced by my grandfather, but that statistic gave me doubt.

Wikipedia has an article on ticker-tape parades, according to which the largest was actually that for General Douglas MacArthur in 1951. Apparently they still have "ticker-tape parades" on occasion, but as ticker-tape is no longer used, I don't see how that could be considered authentic. What would a good 21st century equivilent be?

Did AOL stop sending out those cds, or is that just one of the the things that the Post Office no longer gets to New Orleans post-K?

I haven't received an "AOL" cd in ages. At one point I think they were sending them out in DVD containers.. It all just seems like such a waste of packaging and postage.

With the postage hike I'm not sure if they do that anymore.. Also you can get AIM (instant messenger & the email) for free.. although using AOL for a internet connection.. not sure how that works these days (cause AOL would ride on your local provider I think at least for dial up).

To be clear, I was asking about AOL discs not because I wanted to sign up for AOL, but as I liked the thought of a million AOL discs falling like rain from the windows of Manhattan as a substitute for ticker-tape.

I saw Armstrong step out, but have no memory of it because I was Jorie's age at the time.

I do have vivid memories of one of the later missions, probably Apollo 15 or 16, when I was old enough that my father could explain some of what was happening and I could get it. I thought of it not as a momentous occasion but as just another thing adults routinely did; the main thing that disturbed me was when he explained about rocket stages, because I was convinced there were people in the lower stages who were getting thrown away with the pieces of the rocket. But in the late 1970s in school I became a huge space buff.

AOL is trying to be Yahoo now and it is free to register on their web site.

The last time the yankees won the world series there was whatever they do instead of ticker parade and I can't remember what that was. You know it has been decades since brokers had stock tickers. They all have wireless hand held computers with touch screens running linux now and watch the 30 feet tall screens wrapping all around the trading floor with streaming data and hype and adverts. The only thing that they still do from the old days is scream into phones all at the same time. When they stop doing that then I will have to look for a new job...

By the time the apollo missions were going I was more wrapped up in the vietnam war and such. I didn't even remember there were several missions after Armstrong/Aldrin. I was reading the synopsis of the missions and like the final words of the final mission:

"OK Jack, let's get this mother outta here."

That feels real.

I remember watching HBO's dramatization of Apollo 12 on the Science Channel.

Al Bean was played by Kids in the Hall's Dave Foley. That reminds me, I have to add Brain Candy to my Netflix queue.

I remember my entire grade school class going to a classmates house next door to the school and watching the landing in his front room on his tv. I still remember his name, too.
Joel Gooch.

AOL doesn't send the discs out anymore, unfortunately. I used to string them from fishing line in the cherry trees to keep the birds from eating all the fruit. And no, it didn't work.
Even the BIRDS laughed at AOL!

"Joel Gooch"?

Admit it: you grew up in "L'il Abner", didn't you.
