The Krewe du Vieux Carre has long been a favorite of mine, a highlight of the New Orleans Carnival season. It is no doubt the truest to the ancient traditions of Carnival, with social and political satire and sexual reference.

ladytabitha brought my attention to this amusing article from altsupportchildfree about people bringing children to New Orleans Carnival's most adult public parade (of those not on Mardi Gras Day itself). The below photos are to illustrate this article.
Some people from places where Carnival is not celbrated, familiar only with that portion of New Orleans Carnival that takes place in a portion of Bourbon Street (locals tend to think of that as the area where drunken out of towners interact with other drunken out of towners) have the impression that Carnival is some adults only event. In contrast, a fair number of locals (especially in the suburbs) tend to think of Carnival as something that's just for kids. The truth is that there are a huge variety of events to suit a full spectrum of participants.
The non-children oriented Krewe du Vieux has over a dozen sub-krewes which independantly produce their own themes (which may or may not have any connection to the parade's official "theme" of the year) and floats and costumes.
The float of the priest giving the nun cunnilingus, prominently mentioned in the article linked to above, was produced by the "sub Krewe" The Mystic Korpse of Comatose, which I was co-founder of but have not been involved with for some years. "Comatose Licks The Habit" was indeed quite graphic-- the 10 foot long nun is nude except for her whimple (is that the right term for a nun's hood hat?) and anatomically correct in detail, plus with her eyes bugging out. Comatose has hence won "most graphic float", taking the title from the Krewe of Underwear's entry some years back, "Dead Celebrety Sperm Bank", the float being a giant penis that shot strings of white beads at the crowd out it's tip.
I usually participate in the Krewe du Vieux either as a member of one of the sub-krewes or playing in one of the brass bands, so my pix are usually taken in the line up area before the parade starts.
I have my Carnival photos 2002 on the web at:

but most of what you see below is expigated from my general "Mardi Gras" site.

The float in question

Marchers and effigies that accompany the float

"Ho Brothers Construction". Reference to local street-repair firm "Bo Brothers". This is a marcher who handed out vibrators to favored people along the parade route.

And the previous title holder.
