Musical photos from the first week of January: New Year's Day party joy; somber at Tad Jones' funeral

New Year's Day party at J & A's house, with traditional black eyed peas, rice, cabbage, and great music:

Gotta dance when that second line beat gets going

At Tad Jones funeral procession
Playing in the band doesn't provide the best vantage point for taking pix of it, but I snapped a couple anyway.

Tads death was a real shocker.

I really wanted to make it out to play, but I had a pre-production rehearsal for a CD session booked that morning.

Looks like nice session at J&A's house. only recognise 1 or 2 players. and finally since i can cop yours, i can have photo of the xmas tree there. one year when i visited with my 2 kids (they were very young, like 4 & 7 or so) I visited and took lots of photos of them and A in front of the xmas tree. camera malfunction (i.e. there was no film and I could tell it) and no photos. I didn't know until we returned to NYC. Duh. I took so many photos that day. Several people probably think until this day that I am thoughtless coot for never sending the promised copies of photos. Oh well.

The funeral photo. I'm surprised not to see more people there, but i forget who is still alive and who is back in NOLA. Was Bruce Raeburn there? Although I hear he travels alot. Tad's death is one of those, yeah life is a bitch events. And the Big Wheel keeps on turning...

Take care.

There was a good turn out for Tad's funeral-- the funeral home and parking lot were actually pretty jammed. The photos look sparce as they were taken up at the band, and per the old tradition the mourners were behind the hearse. As the procession went through the cemeteries rather than a residential area, the only folks beside the band were the photographers.

Here's a pic of some of the crowd as they were giving the final blessing and putting the casket in the crypt.

Yeah, Bruce and Lynn were there. Bruce closed down the archive for the event. That's entirely appropriate IMO. Back when Kurt Jerde was running it, I had to miss Alan Jaffee's funeral as he assigned me to hold down the fort. I got some filing done that day.

Rick Coleman asked after you. Have you seen his Fats Domino biography? I think its excellent.

I had thought Bruce might play snare was why I was asking. Glad to hear that Tad was sent off with a big to do according to the traditions.

I am embarressed to say that I haven't read the Fat's book yet. I need to get a copy. Rick has gone through some Brock adventures with Jerry who helped out in some of the family background research.
