Ms. Hollie and me at the Maple Leaf Bar New Orleans

The Maple Leaf was an early re-opener in the land between the Quarter and the Jefferson Parish line, at this time still running on a small generator as power was not yet restored to this part of town. There was still a "tap water must be boiled" order in effect then.

We look something of a mess, but probably less so than most New Orleanians at the time.

I can't tell if that's flood guck on the wall, or just the same old Maple Leaf grime- I'm guessing the latter.

I liked you friend's story. We'll be able to gross each other out with fridge stories for years! I got lucky- the power came on after about two weeks. Of course, Still Life With Frozen Vermin wasn't too pretty either, it sure made it a heck of alot easier to deal with. At least most people don't have dead body stories- I've got those. Although sticking around turned out to be not the smartest thing to do, I can't imagine what it was like for the evacuees- the suspense must have been grueling, and then the shock of it all...wow.

The Maple Leaf on Oak Street was a few blocks from the flood plain. I think at the time Oak Street was as far back from the river that anything was open anywhere in the city.

We'd been there previously the Saturday night before Katrina hit for the Krewe of OAK!

Yay! Maple leaf!

I'm thinking of either going skiing (brr!) or seeing if I can use frequent flyer miles to go to NOLA for xmas. Do you think the bonfires on xmas eve are still on? I need me an onion mum!

Yay Maple Leaf!

Oh, I'm sure Xmas bonfires will be on again (alas, lotsa wood from collapsed unsalvagable houses for extra fuel).

Come on down! Lemme know if you want crash space.
