American Creole

"American Creole: New Orleans Reunion" is airing nationwide on PBS tonight. It was first shown last week here in New Orleans. It follows New Orleans musician Papa Don Vappie, his family, and musical colleages, making the best of life in post-Katrina New Orleans.

Good documentary-- with a too common audio vice

I just watched it again.

Very good over all, but I was surprised that on my first watching the excellent interviews and visuals had distracted me from some bad music editing of the type that often bugs the hell out of me.

The sound editor did a few excellent slick audio edits, but also threw some things together to make segments of nonsensical musical mishmash.

Back when I did stuff for local PBS, I would beg and insist that the camera man for the "B roll" know enough to get complete choruses on the video tape. A short subject related to local music history that I have a screen credit on continues to be aired as filler, and I still cringe everytime at a musical jump cut put in by a staff editor who was supposedly making my rough edit "more professional" and which I was unable to persuade the producer into taking the time to redo before it aired.

Most tv stations wouldn't dream of airing a program edited with several seconds of video frames sideways or upside down, or repeatedly jumpcutting an interview subject off in mid word mid sentence. But they seem to have no problem with doing the equivilent musically.

Phil Woods once pointed out the same thing to me about music edits. He'd played some sort of "tribute to the American Songbook" thing that aired on PBS, and they cut out the bridge on Take The A Train. Apparently the Great American Attention Span is now too short for a complete performance of a Great American Song.
