Damn.
It feels like someone is constantly pushing against the base of the back of my neck with one hand.

Benign (I hope) cyst? Ick.

About a year ago a massuse friend noticed a small lump (diameter of a quater) on my back and suggested I get it checked. The dermatologist said it was a benign cyst, of a type he'd "seen thousands of". Doctor said it'd cost hundreds of bucks to remove as unnecessary "cosmetic" surgery, so he reccomended doing nothing. I asked if it would go away; he said it might, but more likely would just stay like it was. Soon after a girlfriend told me she'd noticed the lump at least 6 months earlier but never commented on it.
So I did my best to forget about it.
Then on my drive back from Florida I realized that my neck and back were bothering me more than they usually would from driving all day. I felt my back just at the base of my neck. The lump has widened (diameter of a golf-ball), and seems to be pushing against my spine.
I'm going to try to find a doctor to look at it tomorrow. May not be a good time of the year to get one before the end of the hollidays. I hope I don't have to spend the time and make a nusance of myself at an ER to get it looked at.

Thanks for the good wishes.

"I've never heard of a doctor calling a cyst benign before biopsying it. He must have some pretty good insurance. "

Well, I rather prefer the Doctor be mostly right about "benign" than have a generous cash settlement go to my next of kin. Selfish thing that I am.

Update: After a few unsuccessfull calls to find a doc, I wound up doing that going to an emergency room thing. A doctor there looked at it, made vague "doesn't look too bad" sounds, and said it should be excized, and gave me an appointment with a surgeon Monday. I dunno if the surgeon will cut it out Monday or just look me over and schedual something later-- I'd rather get this over with if possible. Doc at the ER said it should be an out-patient procedure that can be taken care of in the surgeon's office.

Also I was given a perscription for antibiotics, though the Doc admitted she didn't have a particular reason to think that would help the problem. Antibiotics are to recent medicine what blood-sucking leeches was 2 centuries ago-- when in doubt, perscribe some; hey, it might help.

The pain is mild but I feel like if it keeps up it's gonna throw my spine out of alignment. No matter what I do I feel like I'm in some sort of awkward position that my body isn't designed to maintain for any length of time. Tonight and tomorrow I'll probably do what I did last night-- asprin and a couple shots of whiskey before going to bed.
