I guess this is the first time we've gotten to watch a major city die as it happened on television.

New Orleans is the first major lowlying city to go; I expect we'll be seeing more and more of this in the near future.

I've been telling myself that it can't be dying, that there must be some way to resuscitate it. But even the most optimistic predictions now ... no one is talking about what will happen in the future, but it doesn't sound as if there's much to rebuild. I'm guessing that in twenty years New Orleans will be a smallish town, mostly existing to serve the port; with a population of perhaps a tenth what it was last month.

I hope I'm wrong.

Nah. They'll have one helluva cleanup and be back in time for Mardi Gras, even if Rex rolls in his underwear.

I wasn't worried about NOLA not coming back until today, when fires started on Bourbon Street and thousands are being bussed to Houston, where they might just decide to stay.

I really, really hope that doesn't happen.
