Watching (bits of) the Coronation
May. 7th, 2023 02:14 pmI usually don't get up until 8am on Saturdays, but I woke up about 4 and couldn't get back to sleep. So I did what I sometimes do when I'm awake but not motivated enough to get out out of bed, and turned on the bedroom tv with the sound off. I was switching channels back & forth between old cartoons and a Jack Benny Show, and saw the Coronation was being broadcast on a neighboring channel. I mostly watched bits of it when the other stations were on commercial breaks, but happened to catch the Holy Hand Grenade and the Behattening. Some of the switching back & forth was unexpectedly in theme, as there was a Popeye cartoon where Popeye and Olive Oyl were crowned royalty, and another cartoon where a character was hit on the head with a big mallet and bumps popped out of their head to form a crown.
I think a good bit of USAians attitudes about royalty were formed by cartoons and old children's story books. I've been observing that some of my acquaintances most into following the Royals are also the ones who are into things like unicorns, Santa's elves, and Easter Bunnies.
