You come across the most amazing things :-) Maybe the ancient use of chocolate was used to get them high? I remember when I was in Holland the history of coffee (& chocolate) was pretty interesting. The Dutch, at first, made it in a very strange way which would be unpalatable to us. They used to make it like a thich tar soup, where you had to virtually spoon it out of the cup. Instead of 43 beans per cup it was more like 1,043 beans to the cup. Talk about overdosing to the max!
I think perhaps the British used to OD on the coffee too...

They circulated a petition protesting "the grand inconveniences accruing to their sex from the excessive use of the drying and enfeebling liquor". A year later, King Charles II tries to supress the coffee houses because they were regarded as hotbeds of revolution but his proclamation is revoked after a huge public outcry and the ban lasts just 11 days."
