August & Katrina

Gosh, August was a pretty good month up to the last week. That stuff at the end was enough to turn it into a wash out, by and large.

Our 504 self-phones work for outgoing calls, but we can't get any in. I asked Verizon if there was anything they could do-- maybe give me an additional local number here in Florida that people could call in? They said nothing could be done until the area code 504 station was back up. I think I'll demand 50% off my bill, as I'm only getting 50% of phone service. One small thing.

My home in old Carrollton is in the highest 10% of the Metro area, and like most 19th century homes here is built elevated off the ground, so as the city seems to be narrowly escaping complete flooding, my neighborhood should be pretty good for water damage. Of course with wind dammage and human factors, I have no damn idea what to expect, so I'll just have to be pleased if eventually I find I have anything at all.

I have no idea when I can come back to start rebuilding. I hope I'll be able to do that. We'll see.

Maybe have to start over somewhere else.
Hollie suggested Hawaii.

Other than second guessing a couple of minor items, the one thing I would have done differently in evacuating is I would have loaded the original art on the walls into my car.

I have a number of friends who know their houses are submerged. I have friends who last I heard were still electing to stay, and I can only hope are alive and well.

Oh, "August & Katrina" is the title of a German dialect vaudeville routine that found its way to record.
I wonder if I'll see my 78 record collection again.

A couple days before the storm, I got a 1920 penny in the change from the bubble tea place up the street from my home. I left it on one of my interior window sills.

Among the New Orleans ephemera here from my wallet pocket are a card for a free bubble tea from there.

Nice to dream I might get to use that some day.

Oh Froggy, I'm so sorry. Is there anything I can do? Seriously, don't hesitate to ask.

I've got a ton of crappy 78s you can have if you need to restart your collection. Songs from old Bob Hope movies! Bob Hope is jazz, right? Whee.

How many lives do frogs have?

Since I know that you've already done the earthquake thing, and now this; I think that a volcanic island has got to be the perfect place to retreat to.
Thank Frog you're OK. I didn't want to hear that you had croaked! Let me know if you need any "get out of purgatory free" cards.
PS King Tut had some great stuff too!

Yes, I think I could use some extra "Get out of Purgatory Free" cards.

Thank you, anonymous stranger, whoever you are.

Here are some clues:
1)I've known you over 20 years.
2)I'm a fellow cleric.
3)I was a subsciber to T.J.of S.S.C.
4)You slept on my floor after the Loma Prieta earthquake.
5)You officiated at my wedding.
6)I'm not Kitty Carlisle.

Depending on how long it looks to be before I can hop back to New Atlantis, I may pay you a visit a bit later in the month, Ms Carlisle.

I have an mp3 of Aunt Hagar's Childrens Blues (the best tune ever recorded, as I believe I have mentioned), so, when you are resettled, you are welcome to my 78 version of it. Also, The Big Guy tells me the used record store he likes has lots of 78s. If there's some special titles that need replacing let me know, I can poke around.

I'm hoping you get to use that Bubble Tea coupon, too.

It's kind of trivial compared to the human tragedy, but as a librarian and archivist, I wonder about the lost cultural artifacts. I understand that Tulane's jazz archive is on the third floor so it's probably ok, but think of the 300 years of history that people have in attics, basements and in drawers that is now gone. And all those great collections of Jelly Roll Morton 78s...

We have August & Katrina on cylinder. It's already digitized, so maybe I'll post it online.

Archives and artifacts

[identity profile] infrogmation.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that is of concern to me as well. The Jazz Archives should be okay. I'm sure much is being lost, as often happens in these things. The Nunez family collection I brought to scholarly attention with so much good stuff was actually just a random half or less of an originally larger collection much of which was lost in Hurricane Betsy in the '60s.

I hope my house will be there, and if so the things I most hope are still there are the original artworks and my various research materials and notes that I never got on my laptop or the web.

Cheers.

If you're ever in my neighborhood, I'll be more than happy to buy you a free bubble tea.

Stay safe and stay positive.

Hey Froggy, glad to hear you're okay. The amount of destruction is just incredible, and I was fearing the worst. I guess I'm kinda far away here in Austria, but if you need anything, just holler out.

I doubt I'll evacuate that far away, but thanks.

Austria just is not safe enough! Should you decide to evacuate in another continent, Europe would be much better. You might even be the first non-businessman ever to visit Milan for a second time!

I really hope your house is still there and standing, same goes for your neighborood and the whole town. I *like* N.O., dammit.

I like to live in the shadows...

According to a (not very reliable) online Italian newspaper Fats Domino and Irma Thomas are missing, while Allen Toussaint was last seen at the Superdome. This is not looking good.

It's good to know that you're in Jacksonville - your a.r.k. pals were worried about you. I was worried more about your trombones, of course.
