Better late than never... though I wonder why it seems a serious problem can be staring people in the face, and it takes a critical mass 2 years to realize it.

comments

I'm not off Twitter yet, in no small part due to a small number of people, mostly posting interesting photos, who haven't yet set up alternatives elsewhere.

The early Elno era was entertaining, with Elno's changing of blue check marks on accounts from meaning "identify verified" to "payed $8" going about how pretty much anyone else would have expected, with chaos and lots of satirizing impersonation accounts. Some moments of comedy gold there.

Now it's transitioned to just sad. Fewer and fewer active interacting accounts, more low grade "alt-right" bozos.

In addition to checking out the remaining accounts of interest, I followed the good suggestion of blocking the paid blue checkmark accounts on sight. Helps increase signal to noise ratio a bit, and I amused myself by plonking a flock of them.

I look at their front pages quickly before blocking. Noticed some patterns.

1)As you might expect, mostly Elno-stans, easiest to find replying to Elno or news about him - not seen much elsewhere.

2)Many MAGA &/or scammy looking crypto coin stuff in profiles.

3)Others, dubious credentials! Bio "CEO" with no business named; "University Professor" with no uni named, "Chief Engineer" of nowhere in particular, "Celebrity" "Entrepreneur" "Investor" "Philanthropist" etc.

Meanwhile Mastodon is getting better, and gotten to the point where I get more content there than Birdsite.

comments
