For the record.... I believe the land was originally owned by the deBoisblanc family, then sold in 1800 to the Fazende family. Not sure how the Fortiers got it... I do know a member of my family (deBoisblanc) was in debt to Charles Fortier around 1830, and some of his land was given for this debt.... Perhaps a similar thing here?
I just don't know how to think of this. I'd love if it had been preserved, I'd love some educational purpose.... The slavery aspect deeply disturbs me. But we do better preserving and learning from history than forgetting and committing some other awful act....
